John Baptist Purcell was born at Mallow, County Cork, Ireland on February 26, 1800, the son of Edward and Johanna Purcell. Edward Dominic Fenwick, O.P., served as a missionary in the region before he became the first Bishop of Cincinnati with establishemnt of the diocese in 1821. John Baptist Purcell became the second Bishop of Cincinnati on 12 May 1833. Cincinnati became a metropolitan see in 1850, and Purcell became archbishop. Edward Dominic Fenwick was born on August 19, 1768 in St. Mary's County, Maryland. In 1784 he went to study at Holy Cross College in Barnheim, Belgium.
